Video Assistant Referees (VAR)
How does video assistant referee improve the game?
Find out how VAR will be used at the 2018 FIFA World Cup

When is VAR used?
Three main incidents (plus one administrative) have been identified as game-changing.
1. Goals
The role of the VAR is to assist the referee to determine whether there was an infringement that means a goal should not be awarded. As the ball has crossed the line, play is interrupted so there is no direct impact on the game.
2. Penalty decisions
The role of the VAR is to ensure that no clearly wrong decisions are made in conjunction with the award or non-award of a penalty kick.
3. Direct red card incidents
The role of the VAR is to ensure that no clearly wrong decisions are made in conjunction with sending off or not sending off a player.
4. Mistaken identity
The referee cautions or sends off the wrong player, or is unsure which player should be sanctioned. The VAR will inform the referee so that the correct player can be disciplined. How does video assistant referee (VAR) work?
Step 1
Incident occurs
The referee informs the VAR, or the VAR recommends to the referee that a decision/incident should be reviewed.
Step 2
Review and advice by the VAR
The video footage is reviewed by the VAR, who advises the referee via headset what the video shows.
Step 3
Decision or action is taken
The referee decides to review the video footage on the side of the field of play before taking the appropriate action/decision, or the referee accepts the information from the VAR and takes the appropriate action/decision.
ARTICLE REVIEW
VAR or video replay is a technology that is intended to assist the referee's job in making decisions about goals, penalties, red cards, and misidentification. The technology is expected to be able to help referees to reduce controversial decisions. For the advantages of VAR technology the first is to reduce the potential for controversial decisions made by referees. You may still remember how the Maradona legend and the incident of his Lord's hand. At that time there was no VAR technology. If at that time there had been this technology, it could be ascertained that Maradona would not be dubbed the Hand of God because it was almost certain that the controversial goal would be annulled after seeing VAR.
VAR weaknesses in technology are prolonging the time to make decisions and make the beauty of football disappear since the presence of VAR.
Already discussed earlier, VAR technology can facilitate the work of referees. But at the same time, the use of VAR technology could reduce the authority of the referee as a decision maker in a soccer match. Because of this great technology, it can even be said that the role of the referee is no longer needed. Why do you have to use the referee if there is a technology that can replace it? So many people think.
